So I finally watched the second episode of "October Road"(Thursday ABC 9) last night and I liked it. My only problem is that I may be biased due to the fact that the song they used for the closing montage was "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" (yeah it does)by Poison.
I like the cast(even Geoff Stults who was just another awful actor on 7th Heaven), its a good setup for a series, has some great music and its definitely good to see Bryan Greenberg(Jake from "One Tree Hill") and Laura Prepon(Donna from "That 70's Show) back on TV.
If you haven't given it a shot yet, you can catch up on the first 2 episodes online here. The series is centered around a novelist who returns home after being away for 10 years. He now has to deal with the repercussions from not only leaving his friends for 10 years but also the fact that they were characters in a book he wrote. While he was only planning to come back for one guest lecture appearance at the local college, he finds out that the girlfriend he left behind has a 10 year old son.
There has already been a classic line of "Just because you are an idiot doesn't mean you need to act like one"(which I feel I may be using often in the near future)
There is an Office Marathon tonight with 5 great episodes sandwiched around a new episode of "Andy Barker P.I."(Thursday NBC 8:30)which you can already watch online. I have always liked Andy Richter (even in "Quintuplets") and he is as funny as ever in this series. In a move that shows a lot of faith in the show, NBC has made the first 6 episodes available online.
My thoughts and suggestions about what to watch, what to listen to and what to do.

Are you addicted yet?
It turns out that my entire life centers around "soft addictions"(TV, procrastination, Monster and the computer to name a few). I admit I have a problem, but I am not yet ready to do anything about it. This is yet another example of the sacrifices that I am willing to make for the betterment of society, and each of you.
Speaking of addictions, once "your team" is out of the NCAA tournament, it is time to turn to alcohol and gambling as the reasons to keep watching. Although I still have a chance to win in my bracket(Florida has to beat Georgetown in the final), even this is not enough to keep me interested. The thing that could save the tourney this year is that it is the "chalkiest sweet 16 since '98"(according to Dan Bernstein on 670 The Score). This means there are a lot of low seeds remaining, which means there is a good chance that college basketball could actually be exciting and enjoyable for the next 2 weekends.
If you rely too heavily on the alcohol to get you though the tourney give AH a try, its a anti-hangover beverage that is available in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

A Great Wednesday Night of TV
(Of the scripted variety at least, not so much with the reality programs)
"Friday Night Lights"(Wednesday NBC 7) and "Lost"(Wednesday ABC 9) were both fantastic episodes. I already consider these 2 of the best shows on TV, but both episodes completely delivered everything I could want from any given hour of television.
Tonights Friday Night Lights confirmed the fact that Tim Riggins is the best character on TV(I wish I hung out with him when I was in 4th grade) and Taylor Kitsch may be the new Chris Pratt. On "Everwood" Pratt slowly transformed Bright Abbott from a one-dimensional dimwitted doofus into a person that we cared about and rooted for(Not to mention his work as the hilarious Che on "The O.C."). Tim Riggins started as a high school drunk who had given up on everything but football, but Kitsch has turned him into an interesting character that while still flawed and filled with self doubt, I now root for every week. Really all of the characters on the show are great, but tonights episode made it clear that Coach Taylor is ready to take Sandy Cohen's place as TV's best dad.
This is a show that is getting better each week and I am very sad that there are only 3 episodes left this season. I am also sad that the show isn't getting better ratings (the recent poor ratings have a lot to do with the "American Idol" juggernaut), but there's not much of a chance that this week will be better. Friday Night Lights is competing against "Bones"(FOX) and "Jericho"(CBS), both of which I like a lot, but this week because of the NCAA tourney "Survivor" took Jericho's place. Just a reminder Survivor is the devil. I have said it before, and I will no doubt say it again, this is a show you should give a try. The pilot episode is available for free on iTunes, and the entire season is available for free online.
Then came "American Idol" which gave us a good look into America's racism. I was excited by the fact that the 4 best singers this season were all black girls(I was imagining a lot of people being upset by that), but I never would have guessed that one of them would be eliminated this early. First of all, I thought Stephanie was bad on Tuesday, but overall she has definitely been much better than Phil, Gina, Haley(who is now "the hot one" and will be safe for awhile) and Chris Sligh. I don't even mention Sanjaya who actually makes me feel sick every time he sings-he is horrible, and must be eliminated immediately.
Jordin and LaKisha are my picks for the final 2, and even though Melinda may be the best singer, I can't see her winning unless she can find a neck(I can't decide if she reminds me more of a frog or a turtle). At this point, the ethnic cleansing of the contestants has become pretty standard year to year(I haven't quite cracked the Sanjaya puzzle yet). But this year LaKisha, Melinda, Jordin and Stephanie started out as the 4 best singers BY FAR, there should have been no controversy, there weren't any close calls. Stephanie not only didn't deserve to go home, she shouldn't have even been in the bottom half. Chris Richardson was the other half of the bottom 2, so that kind of blows my racist theory out of the water, but it is a theory that I am sticking with.
Lost was the perfect way to turn around the of bummer Idol. We found out how Locke ended up in a wheelchair and we also found out "more" about the island(without anything being fully explained). Lost has been on an unbelievable run of episodes over the past couple weeks, and tonight did not let us down. A Locke episode is almost a lock to be a good one because he is such an interesting character and an unusual bad ass, but tonight we learned more about his connection to the island in addition to filling in some of his past. It was also very good to see Jack again, and I have been meaning to say for awhile that Kate is soo hot. Watch it here for free with "quite possibly the sharpest video you've ever seen on the web."

Galápagos
I got a tip from RCD about the 3 hour Galapagos Islands special on the National Geographic Channel tonight at 7(It re-airs several times including; tonight at 10, Monday at noon, Thursday at 7PM and Saturday at 3PM). The special looks great, and according to the website, "takes you to these islands in a stunning three-hour high-definition event. Almost three years in the making, culled from more than 300 hours of HD footage, Galápagos is the first in-depth, full-access film made in over 20 years about these 13 extraordinary islands and the wondrous array of wildlife that calls them home." Unfortunately Comcast doesn't have National Geographic HD yet, and I am struggling with that fact.
After doing some research on the islands, I am fascinated them and I felt compelled to tell you all about it(even though it is a little late, sorry). My hope is the subject matter and the quality of the special will outweigh the beauty of full HD.
If you enjoy the Galapagos special, don't forget about the "11 part mini-series event" Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel next Sunday.

Back to the TV and movies
I am sure the producers of "American Idol"(Tuesday Fox 7) were very worried about halfway into tonights show, it was awful and the competition looked like a joke. But then the ladies "brought it". If Lakisha, Meilinda and Jordan aren't the top 3, then there is something seriously wrong with the voters. There were really only 4 singers who completely stood out, the 3 ladies who were all clearly better than the rest and Sanjaya who was markedly worse than anyone else. I don't vote because I don't care that much about who wins, but I also hold out for the hope that the voters can't be that wrong. But there have already been some very poor choices by "America" this season, and I am sure there will be more to come and this year I think it could get very controversial.
I saw 300 at the local brew and view(which may have helped in my enjoyment) and I thought it was good, but in the immortal words of the Top Cat "It's not going to win any awards". Visually it is an amazing movie. It was shot to look like a comic book and succeeds by actually creating a different world, there is only one scene which was shot outside, everything else was shot in a studio in front of bluescreens. The movie has fascinating battles scenes and a decent story as well as some good old "bad ass" moments. If you liked the action from Braveheart and Gladiator(The 2000 movie with Russell Crowe, not the far superior 1992 boxing movie with Cuba) you will definitely like this movie.
Ricky rocks! I loved seeing the Rickster on "24"(Monday FOX 8), and while the episode was, once again, over the top, it actually got me back into the season. I am hoping Mike Doyle can take over for Jack when he really retires.
Remember you can watch every episode of "The Black Donnellys"(Monday NBC 9) online.
I am excited about Andy Richter's new show on Thursday, but I am really going to miss "30 Rock"(Thursday NBC 8:30) while it is off until April 5th. I noticed that I am saving a lot more episodes of 30 Rock on my DVR than I normally do. I usually try to keep good episodes on my DVR as long as possible so that I can relish in their HD brilliance, although right now I am technologically handcuffed because my current DVRs only have 16 hours of HD space. Normally 30 Rock would be deleted immediately, or at least by Monday, but right now I have 3 episodes which I don't really want to delete.

- The most recent episode is "The Fighting Irish"(watch the 2 minute replay here) which brought use some great "fist names" and also gave us the sneezing Panda (the ultimate internet clip to help break bad news).
- The previous episode is "The Source Awards" (check out this 3 minute collection of clips from the episode) which was a great Tracy episode with a guest appearance by LL Cool J.
- The oldest episode I have saved is from February 1st and is hilarious. The episode "Black Tie"(check out the recap here) included great guest appearances by Paul Reubens(Pee Wee) and Isabella Rossellini and is a completely over the top episode, but it works.

The New Daylight Saving Time
In seemingly the ultimate cross promotion, this weekend is both the unveiling of the new Daylight Saving Time and the cable premiere of An Inconvenient Truth.
Starting this weekend Daylight Saving Time will start the second Sunday of March (previously the first Sunday of April) and end the first Sunday of November (previously the last Sunday of October). According to ZDnet's research, "the argument for changing DST is very clear. The return is that folks will have more daylight and therefore use less power. Hard figures, however, are hard to come by. The Department of Energy has said that by extending DST by two months reduced energy consumption by the equivalent of 100,000 barrels of oil each day. At $60 a barrel those barrels equate to $6 million in savings each day DST is extended, or roughly $360 million." But I have also seen it stated that we will only save about 10,000 barrels of oil each day, which is just a little different from 100,000. There will be an energy consumption study conducted, so we will get to see just how much of a difference it makes.
I am psyched that next week it will still be light out at 7, but if it can also accomplish one of the 3 R's, I am very happy.
The 3 R's you ask? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In Jack Johnson's reinterpretation of the Schoolhouse Rock classic "Three is a magic number"(Check out the Blind Melon version) he adds a message for the environment. I love the fact that he is using a song most people already recognize to encourage kids to make a change and make a difference. If we had this version back in the day, we would not only know our multiplication table for 3, but we may be much better off environmentally. If you happen to be in Hawaii April 21st or 22nd you can support Jack's efforts and check out the Kokua Festival which supports environmental education programs in Hawaii. There will be a special about the festival on the National Geographic Channel starting April 1st, and the concert itself will stream on myspace.
I read that you are supposed to check your fire detector battery everytime you change your clocks(I don't check my detector battery, I just wait for that pleasing beep when the battery is almost dead). The California Energy Commission recommends taking that one step further, when you change your clock, why not change a bulb. Did you know that "If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars." Check this calculator out for a demonstration of what you can save in your house.
Wondering what else can you do? Here is a list of things you can do to reduce your global warming emissions.

More Donnellys (big surprise)
On the website for "The Black Donnellys"(Monday NBC 9) there is a web only episode that was considered too explosive for TV. The episode focused on Sean's treatment in the hospital and if he will be transfered from the ICU to "the ward" as well as Kevin trying everything he can to get Jimmy out of prison. There is no official word on why this episode is only being shown as a bonus web only episode(The rumor is the FCC wanted to make cuts, but I don't think it was too violent). The recap at the begining of next weeks episode should cover all the major points, but if you have a jones for more of the Donnellys, you have a free episode waiting for you.
FOX attacks Obama, I really can't believe just how bad they are. And the really scary thing is that there are probably a lot of people who rely on FOX News as their source of news. The fact that they have been able to convince anyone that they are "fair and balanced" is not only ridiculous, it is insulting. I guess the real problem is that a good portion of the "stupid half of America"(it may actually be more than half, but I don't want to be pessimistic) will believe anything they see or read(or have read to them) without actually questioning it.
For any travelers with laptops, the Air Power Wiki has a listing of airport wifi availability and the location of outlets if you need to recharge between flights.
I thought Dave was good on House, but that episode reaffirmed my decision to not watch this show, it just bugs me.
Make your own BSG video with the Battlestar Galactica videomaker toolkit, seems complicated but I love to bring up Battlestar when I can.
Update 3/8: I can not wait to have a computer with a multi-touch interface. The possible uses are amazing. There is a video at that site or watch this longer version with the inventor showing it off. We are getting close to the Minority Report computers being a reality.

Some more random thoughts
I can't believe I am saying this, but I can't wait to watch "House"(Tuesday FOX 8) tomorrow!
If you haven't heard, Dave Matthews is guest starring on the new episode of House. I am a big fan fan of Dave and I hope he gets a chance to actually act as someone other than a Dave Matthews type character. Plus, seeing Red Foreman as Dave's dad ought to be great. Here is a behind the scenes look at the episode.
I finally watched last weeks "Veronica Mars"(Tuesday The CW 8), which was the last new episode until May 1st, and I couldn't be more sad that the current crime was solved. I realize it couldn't last forever, but I appreciate the effort on both the network and the shows part. You see, I really like Veronica Mars (and Kristen Bell), but I haven't pushed the show very hard, mostly because this is the show's third season and it would take awhile to catch up midseason. This is definitely a show that you should watch from the beginning to fully enjoy. Check out the first season of this intelligent and funny show which is much more than a high school private eye show(although if you are a fan of the teeny bopper shows, that really should be all you need). Sorry, I got distracted, the thing I was saying was that I appreciate everyone on the show giving a shout out to me, and I appreciate the attention they were trying to give me. The most recent crime took place on my birthday and over the past couple of weeks they repeatedly said my birth date on the show. Thank you Veronica Mars and I will now do my best to get everyone ready for season 4.
On Sunday, Showtime and ShowtimeHD will be showing An Inconvenient Truth at 7PM. Hopefully this will give more people a chance to see it, especially with all of the replays. Also the movie will be available On Demand(at least on Comcast) starting on the 12th. If you have both HBO and Showtime in HD, you can go for a dream combo of Return of the Jedi starting at 4:30 on HBO followed by An Inconvenient Truth both in beautiful HD. Seriously if you have an HDTV, you should only be watching HD content, otherwise your TV will be insulted.
It is great to see Emily VanCamp on Brothers & Sisters, now I hope they can bring Ephram in as Justin's friend who used to date Rebecca.

Another Monday and another double dose of "Heroes"(Monday NBC 8) and "The Black Donnellys"(Monday NBC 9). Heroes is quickly becoming my favorite show, and at least a part of that has to do with how easily the writers are able to focus on just a few characters but still keep adding to the storylines of all the Heroes. Last weeks episode was possibly the best yet, and the online gossip is that the next the next one is even better. Remember you can watch the entire series free online(with or without commentary) and each episode reairs Friday on Sci-Fi.
If you still somehow missed the pilot of "The Black Donnellys", and you are unable to come over and watch it in beautiful HD, then here is how you can get caught up. First of all, record the second episode when it airs this Monday, then you have some options. The pilot will replay Tuesday night at 11 on USA , then both the pilot and the second episode will air on Sunday afternoon on Bravo from 2 to 4. Also, the pilot is available online now. Don't miss out on this great new mob drama.
I've always thought that Nintendo Wii looked pretty cool, but Red Steel could be the game that draws in fans and helps to sell a lot of consoles, at least until PS3 and XBOX360 come down in price.
I don't really have time to read, but here is an interesting article about a book. The book My Year Inside Radical Islam : A Memoir tries to warn us of how easily radical Islam can take over the youth of America, but according to this article, he never did anything radical nor did he know about any al-Qaida connections.
Ann Coulter is an idiot, here is a video of her showing exactly what her idea of mudslinging is. I really hope this gets as much attention as Isaiah Washington did, if not share it with someone who will be outraged.
Joss Stone's third album Introducing: Joss Stone comes out March 20th and from what I've heard so far, it sounds great. She is able to keep the amazing soul feel and sound of her voice even when singing to music that sounds more like hip hop than soul music. Joss wrote all of the songs on this album and says,"My goal for '07 is to make good music popular again." It looks like this could be the album that finally forces everyone to take notice of Joss(implied nudity on the cover art and website never hurts), and this may be another step towards the return to glory for Soul Music(thanks Dreamgirls).

Short update
Last night I got a text letting me know that "The Black Donnellys"(Monday NBC 9) is "Instant Top 8". After watching the interactive preview for the second episode it is clear that the show will be able to follow up the excellent pilot with a great series.(My Updated 8 would look something like this-Office, Heroes, Friday Night Lights, Earl, Lost, Donnellys, How I..., ER)
Check out this crazy "Dark Side of Oz"-type video with an original album set to How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
