Weekend update

I have mentioned "The Black Donnellys"(Monday NBC 9 premiering Feb.26) several times before, but I have to tell you about it again because there is a strong chance that this is the best new show of the year. If it can follow up a fantastic pilot episode with a season full of the same quality and great storytelling, we may finally have a series worthy of replacing "The Sopranos". NBC is doing a great job of promoting the show and I hope it will be able to capitalize on the attention "The Departed" will get at the Oscars on the 25th. If you are looking to continue with the gangster theme from Oscar night, check out this great show that looks and feels more like a movie than a TV show. Don't miss it, or if you are impatient like me, you can get it from Netflix.

I am really looking forward to the series finale of "The O.C."(Thursday FOX 8), and I love that they haven't held anything back(pregnancy, marriage, earthquakes and zombies) after they knew the show was ending. I think the past few episodes have been on par with the first season, and I can't wait to see how they tie up the show. The finale takes place 6 months after the earthquake, so we might see just about any or every possible "big event" from a birth to a death to everyone actually leaving Newport. But I am hoping that the episode will focus as much on the characters and their relationships(which is what made the show great) as it does on wrapping up the series with big dramatic moments. Also, how can you not love a show that is willing to admit the very real threat that zombies pose, seriously they're coming, Seth is just warning us.

I have just starting watching my second streaming movie on Netflix, I started with The Candidate and now I'm watching the 1991 Sean Astin classic Toy Soldiers. Both movies took a little over a minute to build a buffer and start playing, and while the quality is not great it is watchable. The selection of movies is underwhelming, with mostly older movies, but there are some good options including a few new movies like Sherrybaby, with others being added all the time. There's a section with suggestions based on your ratings as well as a list of movies that are in your Queue(although out of my queue of 140 movies only 3 are currently available). Right now it is setup so that you get 1 hour of instant viewing for every $1 you spend on your monthly plan, with no way to buy more time. So I am thinking of this as an easy way to sample movies to see if you should rent it instead of a good way to actually watch a whole movie.

I am not actually saying "Knights of Prosperity"(Wednesday ABC 7:30) is a good show, its actually pretty stupid, but the characters are hilarious and overall the show is very enjoyable. Donal Logue leads a group of seemingly normal honest guys who have bigger dreams than they can afford, so they decide to rob from the rich(in this case Mick Jagger) to give to themselves. It almost seems more like a sketch show, where each scene follows the dimwitted crew in different directions as they plan the perfect heist, but the show still somehow seems to work as a whole. The show will most likely be canceled soon, due to its quirky setup and a tough timeslot("Friday Night Lights" and "Jericho" are both on at 7 and I recommend both of them over Knights, and to make things worse "American Idol" will be on at the same time now with 2 hour episodes). But it is worth checking out online or when it comes out on DVD.

I need to comment on 24. I've enjoyed this season, but the last two-hour episode pissed me off so much that it almost wasn't enjoyable. I can stand a certain amount of human cowardice, but the tally jumped from 1 to 3 last Monday.

The first guy – the effeminate dad from the first couple of hours. This guy was so scared of a severely wounded Kumar, armed with only a pistol and a cell phone and losing more consciousness every minute from blood loss and pain killers, that he killed a dude and brought a nuclear detonator (or whatever it was) to the terrorists with the hope that they would pat him on his back and send him and his family on their merry way. The result: he was killed as soon as he delivered the device, a large part of L.A. was blown up, and when CTU finally broke into the guy’s house, his son escaped unharmed.

The second guy – Morris. Man, I expected a lot more from him. I mean what the f@ck? Not only did he know that CTU was right freaking outside the building and about to find him, but they were only drilling holes into fleshy areas. Sure it’s gotta hurt, but not worse than the pain of having to try to live with yourself knowing that you gave terrorists the one thing they needed to detonate 4 freaking nuclear bombs. What a d-bag. No way Edgar would have reprogrammed that sh!t.

Lastly, Jack’s sister-in-law. Really, is this the theme for this year – as soon as someone threatens to kill someone’s son they do exactly what they say? I’m pretty sure that if my father-in-law just told me that he was linked to a nuclear bomb that just exploded and that he killed my wife and would kill my son unless I did exactly what he said, and I was in the car with my brother-in-law, Jack freaking Bauer, when I got the call, I think I would tell Jack and let him plan a way to save the boy, avoid the obvious trap, and get revenge on the dad. Of course she led them obediently to the trap and now she’s running for her life and the best lead CTU had is blown. I think the most annoying part is that she was trying to tell Jack right before they went into the house to be blown up, but couldn’t speak loud enough to interrupt him and just gave up. Pathetic.

Oh, and then there’s the woman who shot MacKenzie or whatever his name was to get the 7 million herself. Surprise, surprise, they shot you. “Wait, but I did what you told me to do, how can you shoot me?” Maybe it’s because their goal is to kill people? Just a hunch. I really hope the next person they try to boss around just spits in Fayed’s eye and calls him a son of a motherless goat.

I agree.
Normally I am able to forgive the show for having characters make stupid choices or appear weak, besides Jack of course.
In the past I have been able to accept some of the stupid decisions characters make because it at least felt like authentic reactions to stressful situations.
But this season has been much more frustrating to deal with because there are so many poor choices being made.
